In 2006, Madonna established raising Malawi with the goal of improving children’s lives in Malawi. Raising Malawi supports orphans and vulnerable children in Malawi through health, education and community support.
For over a decade, Madonna has devoted her philanthropy to creating programs that support health, education and poverty reduction in Malawi. Her organization constructed and operates Malawi’s first pediatric surgery and intensive care unit, which gives hundreds of life-saving surgeries annually. 700+ orphans supported through comprehensive health, vocational and HIV awareness programs each year and 5,600+ children benefit from raising Malawi’s primary and secondary schools. More girls across the country are completing their secondary education due to raising malawi scholarships
Madonna was hailed as a “symbol of a motherly spirit” by Malawi president peter Mutharika after opening a children’s hospital in 2017, named after her adopted daughter Mercy James.
